A player insists on stringing as tight as the machine allows because they believe it gives them "more control," and another swears by the lowest possible tension for "more power," and both are repeating something they heard once and never tested. The myths around tension extremes are persistent because they sound intuitive, and untangling them is one of the more common conversations a stringer has.
What low tension actually delivers
Lower tension increases the trampoline effect of the string bed, which means the strings store and return more energy on contact. This produces more free power and a larger, more forgiving sweet spot, but it comes at the cost of precision — the ball leaves the racquet with more variability in direction and depth, since the string bed deforms more and the player has less direct feedback about where the ball is going. Low tension rewards players who already generate their own pace and need help with comfort and consistency, not players looking to add raw power to a slow swing.
What high tension actually delivers
Higher tension reduces the trampoline effect, giving the player more direct control over where the ball goes and a firmer, more responsive feel off the string bed. The tradeoff is reduced power — the player has to generate more of their own pace, since the strings return less energy — and a smaller, less forgiving sweet spot, which punishes off-center contact more severely. High tension is generally better suited to players with fast, technically sound swings who already produce plenty of pace on their own.
The arm health dimension
This is where the conversation often surprises players: higher tension, not lower, is more commonly associated with increased shock transmission to the arm, because a firmer string bed absorbs less of the impact itself and passes more of it through to the frame and the player's arm. Players nursing tennis elbow, wrist strain, or general arm sensitivity are frequently steered toward lower tension specifically for this reason, even if their stated goal was control. A player chasing maximum control at maximum tension may be trading long-term arm health for short-term feel, and that tradeoff deserves to be named explicitly rather than left implicit.
Common misconceptions worth correcting
- Tighter strings do not automatically mean more spin — spin comes primarily from swing path and string surface texture, not tension
- Looser strings do not mean a racquet is "broken in" or worn out — tension loss over time is a separate phenomenon from the player's chosen starting tension
- A player who strings very tight to compensate for a weak swing is usually working against themselves, since they're removing the racquet's power assistance at the moment they need it most
- Extreme tension at either end of the range rarely solves a technique problem, and a stringer pointing this out gently is doing the player a favor
Setting realistic expectations
Most players land in a comfortable middle range once they've actually tried both extremes, since the marginal benefits of going further toward either end tend to flatten out quickly while the downsides keep compounding. Encouraging a player to test a change in small increments — a kilogram or two at a time — rather than jumping straight to an extreme gives them a much better sense of where their own preference actually sits, instead of chasing a number they read about online.
Tension extremes aren't wrong, but they're rarely the right starting point. The conversation that matters is what the player is actually trying to solve — power, control, comfort, or arm health — and matching the tension to that goal rather than to a belief about what tight or loose strings universally do.
