Long-term creep under repeated load
Beyond the initial settling, strings continue to lose tension gradually every time they're struck, a process generally called creep. Each impact stretches the string slightly beyond its resting length, and the material does not fully recover between hits. Over weeks of play, this creates a steady decline in string bed firmness that has nothing to do with visible wear or fraying.
Why material changes the rate
- Polyester strings are stiff and lose tension faster in the first 24–48 hours, then stabilize at a lower baseline than other materials
- Multifilament strings lose tension more gradually but over a longer period, and feel softer throughout that decline

None of this requires a string to have moved out of place or shown visible damage. The string can look completely intact and still be performing well below its original spec.
How playing conditions affect the rate of loss
Heat speeds up tension loss across every string material, which is why a racquet left in a hot car or played in summer heat will feel looser sooner than the same setup in cooler conditions. Players who hit with heavy topspin also accelerate tension loss compared to flatter hitters, since the added friction and string movement put more repeated stress on the bed. Frequency of play matters as much as intensity — a racquet hit for two hours a day will lose tension faster in absolute terms than one played for thirty minutes, even at the same swing style.
Setting expectations on restring timing
The practical answer for most players is to restring based on hours played rather than waiting for a string to break, since breakage and tension loss follow different timelines. A player who breaks strings rarely but plays several times a week is a strong candidate for restringing on a schedule, not on failure. Framing this as maintenance rather than an upsell helps players understand why a string that "still looks fine" is worth replacing.
A simple rule many shops use with customers: if a racquet hasn't been restrung in the time it would take to wear through a pair of court shoes, it's worth checking the tension regardless of how the strings look.
